Understanding Electricity in Fort Worth, Texas

Fort Worth is part of Texas’s deregulated electricity markets, one of the largest in the country. Being part of a deregulated market means you get to choose your electricity provider instead of being assigned one.

What is the Difference Between an Electricity Provider and a Utility Company?

  • Your electricity provider, like CleanSky Energy, sells you the electricity plan, sets your rate, and handles your billing.
  • Your utility company, Oncor Electric Delivery, owns the poles and wires that bring power to your home, reads your meter, and responds to outages. Oncor’s delivery charges apply no matter which provider you choose, since they are the same for every Fort Worth resident regardless of who supplies their power.

You can’t switch your utility, but you can absolutely switch your provider, and CleanSky Energy makes switching easy!

Why Fort Worth Chooses CleanSky Energy

Texans can choose their electric provider, but the process isn’t always easy. We’re tired of it, and so are you.

That is why we founded CleanSky: to help customers make better, more informed energy decisions. And we’re just getting started.

  • What if I have a power outage?

In the event of an emergency power outage in your home, call your local utility company. They are responsible for fixing power outages when they occur. Your utility’s contact information is found on your monthly energy invoice.

  • Do I need any special equipment for a renewable energy plan in Fort Worth, TX?

No additional equipment is necessary to receive electricity from CleanSky Energy. Your home or business will use the same energy supply lines as always.

  • Is CleanSky Energy affiliated with the local utilities?

No. We are in no way associated with utility companies. CleanSky Energy is licensed by the appropriate Public Utility Commissions to supply electricity in all states we serve. The utility companies are regulated to transport electricity to the population. CleanSky Energy purchases green energy commodities from the open energy market to provide our customers with the most affordable energy rates possible.

  • How do clean energy plans work in Texas deregulated markets?

Customers choose their retail electric provider, such as CleanSky Energy, and an electricity plan rather than being assigned a utility with a set rate. Utilities still own and maintain the power lines and deliver electricity, but REPs buy power from the wholesale market and sell it to customers through a variety of plans. These plans can vary by price structure (fixed vs. variable), contract length, time-of-use rates, and features like renewable energy content or bill credits.

Clean energy plans are an option within deregulated markets. The actual electrons powering your home come from the same Texas grid regardless of plan, but REPs purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) on your behalf to match the amount of electricity you use.

  • Is electricity deregulated in Fort Worth, Texas?

Yes, Fort Worth is part of Texas’s deregulated electricity market, which means residents and businesses can choose their own electricity provider instead of being locked into a single default option.

  • How long will it take for my electricity to switch over?

The exact time for switching is determined by your local utility. It depends on when you enroll, but the change will most likely occur on the date of the next scheduled meter reading by the utility. After enrolling with us, you will receive a welcome letter with the details of your energy agreement. It may take one to two billing cycles for CleanSky Energy to appear on your invoice from the utility company.

  • Is it necessary to call my current supplier?

No. We’ll handle notifying the right people for you. CleanSky will ensure it’s completely seamless and with no interruption in energy service.

  • How much does it cost to switch to CleanSky?

There is no enrollment fee with CleanSky Energy. However, your local utility may charge a nominal, one-time service charge that will appear on the following invoice from the utility.

  • Who is my electric utility in Fort Worth?

Oncor Electric Delivery is the utility company that manages the power lines and responds to outages in the Fort Worth area.

  • What is the difference between an electricity provider and a utility company?

Your provider sells you your electricity plans and sets your rate. Your utility delivers the power to your home and keeps the grid running. You can change your provider any time; your utility stays the same based on your address.
